Fear of losing myself based on what Religion taught me

Growing up in church, our leaders taught us that we should be transformed “by the renewing of the mind” (found in Romans 12:1–2). I remember my aunts telling me to surrender to God and do what he wanted as early as I could read.

Pastors preach this as well. They say we should turn over our desires to God. They say we are born in sin. They say that the heart is deceitful. I’m then left to wonder if there is anything good in us. In me.

The kicker here is that it’s hard to know what God wants. And I mean God. Not what someone wrote about him or what a preacher said.

At the end of the day, it was clear that whatever God was almost always different from what I wanted.

It worsens because Paul keeps telling us that the flesh or fleshly desire is terrible.

One of the issues with rigid places like churches or the army is that you stop checking with yourself after a while. You stop trusting yourself. The things you want and your desires don’t seem valid. After some time, you undoubtedly will be separated from your true self.

(Fear — of leasing yourself. Your true self )
