When Calamity Brings Humanity Together

I am not a social scientist, but I do observe people — although not directly but through my skeptical eyes of their social media feeds. My recent observations have made me feel bad about the society I live in for the sheer amount of extremist views people hold and how even the well educated people tend to be divided on the basis of religion, race and ethnicity.

We have seen people and motivators speak so passionately and enviously about the Americans. People in America are often applauded for their consideration for equality. But the brutal killing of George Floyd has stained the country’s long reputation. What was even more appalling and shameful was the violent public protests that ensued. Frustrated youths took to streets to vandalize places of worships and public properties, killing and harming thousands of people in the turmoil. My conclusion: even Americas are not as civilized as we think.

Back in India, a country that is often admired for its rich spiritual values and heritage, we have seen people killing each other in the name of religion and places of worship. The elected representatives of the largest democratic country in the world are busy building mansions for gods in order to appease the folks of the communally divided country.

Despite all these differences and the shattering reports of inhuman acts from different parts of the world, one happy news caught my attention yesterday. It was about a plane crash in my very own state and how people came together despite their differences to save whoever they could from among the people stranded in the crashed plane. It’s not for the first time that people of Kerala have shown their unity and great sense of co-operation to the amusement of the rest of the world. This unity was well reported and appreciated when the infamous flood hit the entire state in the last two consecutive years. I wonder; should we wait until a calamity hit us to come together and show respect to each other? Can’t we be united irrespective of our diverse nature at all time?
