Alice Lake, Sawtooth National Recreation Area

If you’re looking for the best hike in Sawtooth National Recreation Area, look no further because Alice Lake is the best. It’s a bit of a challenge, though, to reach this cobalt-blue lake, says Benjamin Westover of Idaho. It takes a seven-mile hike to get there with over 1,800 feet of gain. Some says it is 7.8 miles (out-and-back) and 1,300 feet of elevation gain. The lake is surrounded by peaks, which are both stunning and reminiscent of Swiss mountains.

Upper Hazard and Hard Creek lakes

The trek may be quite easy — meadows filled with flowers, soaring peaks of granite, and a bit of solitude. And there’s a good view of the Bruin Mountain flanking the Upper Hazard Lake, adds Benjamin Westover of Idaho. The itinerary actually starts with a 3.8 miles hike (out-and-back) to Upper Hazard Lake, with an easy elevation gain of 350 feet — good for families on a camping trip. The hike can go further with up to 5 miles (out-and-back) toward Hard Creek Lake. These two scenic spots — Upper Hazard and Hard Creek Lake — can be located about 20 minutes north of Brundage Mountain Resort.

Pioneer Cabin Trail, Sawtooth National Forest

In the 1930s, the Sun Valley Company constructed a cabin located beneath the spectacular Pioneer mountains in order to promote European style skiing. The cabin is still in good shape, and waits as a sort of a reward for weary hikers who have to navigate over 3.6 miles and 3,000 feet of elevation gain. Staying in the cabin is on a first-come, first-served basis, says Benjamin Westover of Idaho.
