You know the type. They leave dishes in the sink for weeks, leave trash around, bring friends over completely unannouced. Bad roomates are a pain, but in my experience, they’re almost a right of passage. Almost everyone I know has had at least one bad experience with roommates and every one of those people has expressed to me how incredibly frustrating terrible roomates can be. I have had my share of these roommates, a few almost brought me to tears with frustration actually, and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. However, like I said, bad roommates are almost a right of passage so here are my top tips for dealing with inconsiderate housemates.

This is a big one. Having a meeting when you first move in will enable everyone to hash out their expectations for the living arrangements. How often do you want your roommates partners coming over? Do you want to have a cleaning schedule? How much notice do you have to give if someone is going to stay over? These things might seem minute to you, but trust me, when your roomate’s girlfriend/boyfriend stays over for a month straight and the trash hasn’t been taken out in weeks, they can become the most annoying thing in your life.

Getting angry and aggressive will just cause a fight. Instead, calmly text them or tell them to their face your concerns. If you want them to wash their dishes, just kindly ask them. If you want them to do their part in the cleaning, just request that they clean the kitchen or bathroom more regularly. At the end of the day, if you don’t tell them that you don’t like something, they will never know. If they don’t listen, try calmly telling them again, this time more firmly.

As much as it pains me to say it, there are a lot of people out there that are very inconsiderate and rude and won’t care what you ask or say. If your roommates’ habits are truly starting to frustrate you and and make your day to day life in your place very difficult, it might be time to start checking online for places to rent. Just make sure that next time, you get some better roommates.
