Safety Tips for Travelers in the Digital World

Our learning ability decreases when we have a cell phone or computer next to us. Immediately after the lecture, the group with the computer did not remember the lecture more than the group without it.

An American researcher instructed some students to organize their contents with paper and pens while listening to Ted’s lecture and to organize the rest on a computer.

Studies have shown that people who wrote on paper understood the lecture better. They didn’t remember more details, but they understood what it wanted to convey better.

When writing with a pen, most people can’t write it down as quickly as with a keyboard, so they have to prioritize what to write. In other words, when you write it down by hand, you have to process the information and thus understand the information better.

So when taking notes while listening to a lecture, take notes on paper rather than on a laptop.

If you have no choice but to take notes on a computer, you should write down important information based on priorities rather than taking it down word by word.

In a study, 30 subjects were asked to meet a stranger and talk about what the other person wanted for 10 minutes. They each sat in their chairs with a table between them.

One group was required to put their cell phones on the table, and the other group was kept invisible. And then I let him talk about how interesting the conversation was.

Those who had cell phones in sight answered that the conversation was less interesting, and even explained that they were not trustworthy and had poor emotional exchanges.

They just put their phones in front of them and answered like this even though they never picked them up!

The same results were found in a study evaluating dinner with friends. Half of the 300 subjects were told to keep their cell phones because they would receive text messages during dinner, and the other half were told not to.

According to the study, those who had cell phones rated dinner as less informative. The difference was not very large, but it was a significant level. Simply put, having a cell phone on the table makes you think it’s boring to hang out with others.

In addition, during my school class, the teacher advised if the person you asked out for a date prioritized phone rather than you, you should not ask him/her out again.

So when you meet people in your daily life, focus on themselves, not on your cell phone. It may be difficult to do it with your will, so it would be better to put your cell phone in your bag rather than in your pocket.

Check the screen time of your devices. Try using an app that tells you how often you pick up your phone and how long you use it. This way, you can clearly see how much your phone is taking up your time. Perception is the first step in change.

Buy an alarm clock and a wristwatch. Don’t leave unnecessary functions to mobile phones.

Turn off our cell phones for 1–2 hours a day. Tell people around you that you decided not to use your cell phone for one to two hours every day. Then you won’t get a message of irritation or anger because you don’t answer.

Turn off all push notifications.

Set the cell phone to black and white. Colorless displays reduce dopamine secretion, and when dopamine secretion decreases, it also affects the mind to scroll.

Put the phone on mute when we drive. It reduces the risk of distraction at critical moments. Mobile phone messages and calls can take away your concentration when you need them the most. Even if you don’t answer messages or calls.

If you’re doing something that requires concentration, don’t put your cell phone next to you. Put it somewhere else unreachable.

Set a separate time for checking text messages or emails. For example, you can spend two to three minutes an hour.

When you are with your friends, change your cell phone to silent and put it a little away. Focus on the people you’re meeting. Then the time we spend together will be more fun!

The behavior of looking at a cell phone is contagious. If you decide not to look at your phone, the domino effect will appear and others will do the same.

Don't bring your cell phone to the classroom! Cell phones interfere with learning.

Limit screen time and do other activities. Setting screen time in minutes per day is difficult to do. However, if the numbers are absolutely necessary, adults and infants should limit their use of cell phones and displays in their free time to up to two hours a day. Excluding sleep, meals, commuting, and commuting hours, you spend a seventh of your waking hours in front of the display! One hour is appropriate for children under the age of eight. And it’s better to set a separate time for other activities. Set a time to use for homework, physical activity, and meeting friends.

Show a good precedent. We learn by imitating each other. Children copy actions, not words.

Turn off your cell phone, tablet, or e-book reader for at least an hour before you lie down.

If you have sleep problems for a very small reason, don’t leave your cell phone in your bedroom. If you have to wake up in the morning, use the alarm.

If you have to keep your cell phone in your bedroom, turn off the notification and change it to silent.

Don’t check work-related mail right before lying down.

Take a closer look at the symptoms (stress symptoms include attention deficit, anxiety, fatigue, dry mouth, cold sweat, sleep disorders, abdominal pain, increased sensitivity to infection, teeth grinding, short-term memory loss, and anxiety). However, keep in mind that the symptoms may be caused by other factors than stress. If you’re uncertain, visit the health center.

All movement is good for the brain. But it’s best to increase your heart rate. But you don’t have to complete the marathon. From the brain’s point of view, walking alone can have an amazing effect. The most important thing is practice. In addition, it is better if the heart rate increases.

If you want to reduce your stress level as much as possible through physical activity and increase your concentration, move your body three times a week, 45 minutes, to get short of breath and sweat.

Follow only those who want to communicate actively.

Consider SNS as a communication tool. Active comments on other people’s feeds create a sense of belonging and strong intimacy.

Remove social media apps from your cell phone and use them only on your computer.
