How Rediscovering My Art Practice Made Life Easier

No, it’s not just about being more relaxed either

I would say as a kid, I liked to draw. I tried drawing pretty much everything and anything. The end results weren’t the greatest, but as a kid, it didn’t matter to me.

I kept going. I drew people, plants, houses, trees, animals, the Solar System. I drew so many doodles and lines. Shapes and weird things. It was fun. It was relaxing.

It was my creativity on a flow basis. Yes, it was procrastination too. I mean what kid doesn’t prefer doodling over, well everything school-related?

My art was so important to me, my parents thought let’s send him to art camp. Yes, that was a thing and it was fun. It broadened my creative skills. I learned sculpture, stained glass, and even some acting.

A unique way to spend one’s summers for sure. One would think this love of doodles and art would lead to art school. Nope. Not this guy.

I didn’t take one art class in college. In fact, I think I drew one picture for fun my sophomore year. That was it. I doodled in the margins of course, but I did pay more attention as an undergrad than all four years of high school.

In the end, art just wasn’t my future.

Fast-forward a decade and one evening, when my son was two, I picked up a pencil again. A clean, freshly sharpened, H graphite pencil. Away I went.

That was 2014 and I never looked back. The spark returned. The hiatus of my creativity was over. The journey started again. Drawing instantly became a part of my life once more.

Here’s the thing about a creative habit, it happens whenever you want it to. There’s no pressure to create other than the pressure you place on yourself. Yes, is it relaxing and a stress-reliever, of course.

Yet my art practice improved my life more than just relaxing. Practicing art brought the realization of the importance of time. We all know that time is a finite commodity. Being creative has taught me the importance of time management. Which as a father of two with a 9–5, time truly feels in short supply.
