A Letter to Pakistani Men from Pakistani Women in 2022

To the men of Pakistan,

This last year has shown us all what unchecked toxic masculinity does to the health and safety of women. I saw how a woman lost her life to a predator that had a history of targeting and abusing women, but also a history of being underreported for it. It is high time that such toxic masculinity is called out in your conversations.

2021 has shown us that not enough men are being singled out for their hypocrisy towards women, by other men. Men have harassed women in the streets, in parks, and on roads. This should be condemned by all and not some men.

Some men need to be vocal about their support for the women in their lives, instead of hiding it. The men who have been supporting the educational development of their female relatives, or helping keep women safe in public areas need to make their voices heard. Silence is no longer an option.

Pakistani men have thrown acid on women for refusing their marriage proposals. They have been attacking the young women who aren’t old enough to take care of themselves. They have been attacking women online, sometimes even viciously, in full view of the public.

Pakistani men need to be called out on their toxic masculinity. But women alone cannot do this. Men need to reform their perception of violence and address it once and for all.
