We just started the year, and I already see posts about how to lose the weight earned during Christmas and magic diets to look amazing in your bikini this summer.

But how does weight influence our happiness?

My own experience repeatedly affirms that it doesn’t matter how many kilos we weigh — our happiness is based on other kinds of things, like the thoughts we have about our bodies and ourselves.

I listen to people of all sizes complain about their bodies because almost everyone suffers from body complexes and wants to change parts of their bodies or even all of it.

After so many years, I still fight with myself when I look in the mirror. I see parts of my body that would love to be more flatter. Now, I start to examine myself with compassion and love, thinking that I look gorgeous as I am (and I do), that I am who I am not because of my body, but for who I am. And while it’s true that I will have to continue fighting to see myself well and beautiful in the mirror, it is also true that I have begun to look at myself from another point of view: self-love.

The most worrying thing about this is that I am not the only one to feel this way. The media, including social networks, are making us believe that there is a “perfect” body. But why are they imposing on us a body that most of the population does not have? Why do they need to advertise a specific type of body if no one can get it?

We should begin to understand that all bodies are perfect just the way they are. Why don’t we stop comparing ourselves and start looking at each other with love?

I would love to help each of you who read this article and feel identified with this injustice. Try to help you see yourself from another point of view with much more value and realise that your body is wonderful for the simple fact of existing.
